Fair question, and one we get a lot. Liquid dry cleaning is a low moisture method: a liquid cleaning solution goes onto the carpet, strips and encapsulates the soil in the fiber, and is then lifted out.

The “dry” is about how little water is involved, not about no liquid touching the carpet. So little moisture is used that the carpet is dry again within hours, and the backing and padding underneath never get wet at all.

Think of it as the opposite of steam cleaning, which sprays large amounts of hot water into the carpet and leaves it damp for a day or more.

Most homes want cleaning every 12 to 18 months. Households with pets, children, or a lot of foot traffic are better off every 6 to 12 months. Commercial buildings with daily traffic through carpeted areas need a recurring schedule rather than an occasional appointment.

The single most important part of that answer: do not wait until it looks dirty. That is the mistake almost everybody makes, and it is covered properly below.

Carpet is built to hide what is in it. By the time soil is visible at the surface, it has worked its way up from the backing, and it has been sitting against the fiber the whole time.

Sand and grit tracked in on shoes behave exactly like sandpaper. That is what a traffic lane really is. Not a stain sitting on top, but fiber that has been abraded and distorted, and no amount of cleaning afterwards puts that back.

Cleaning on a schedule prevents it. Waiting causes it.

People tell us all the time that they held off for years because they did not want to shorten the life of the carpet, and now it simply has to be done. It is worth being clear: that belief is backwards, and it costs people their floors.

The fear is not baseless, it is just aimed at the wrong thing. Hot water extraction can oversaturate carpet, and oversaturation breaks down the backing and the padding underneath. That genuinely does take years off the life of the floor.

Low moisture liquid dry cleaning does the opposite. It removes the abrasive grit that wears the fiber down, which is the thing that actually ends a carpet’s life.

Steam cleaning is another way of saying hot water extraction. It sprays hot water into the carpet and vacuums it back out. The appeal is the idea that the hot water is killing bacteria.

In practice, a cleaning product that works kills the bacteria on its own. A good deal of the industry leans on hot water to make up for what its product is not doing.

Hours, rather than the day or more hot water extraction leaves behind. Hot water extraction usually leaves carpet damp for a day or more.

One customer described walking on her carpet after a professional cleaning and seeing water come up between her toes. That is what oversaturation looks like, and it is not what should happen.

This is exactly why the method has to be matched to the problem. Treating only the visible spot leaves the odor, because the odor is underneath.

Nearly always. A great deal of carpet condemned as a replacement job is carpet that has simply never been cleaned properly.

Saving somebody thousands of dollars on replacement is the better part of this job, and it is the recommendation we would always rather make.

Floors other companies refused to even quote have come clean, including a bowling center and a bedroom carpet stained with turmeric that three companies said had to be cut out and replaced.

A single square inch of carpet can hold over 200,000 bacteria. That is thousands of times what lives on a toilet seat.

It starts with dead skin cells, pet dander, food particulate and dirt off the soles of shoes. Given long enough, E. coli, salmonella, mould and dust mites follow.

There are people who will lay paper down before sitting on a toilet seat and then walk across that carpet without a second thought.

Not really, and this one surprises people. Shoes bring in sand and grit that abrade the fiber, but bare feet transfer skin oils straight into the carpet, and those oils attract and hold soil.

Socks are the best thing you can do for your carpet. A basket of them by the door is not a silly idea.
